CERTIFIED MEDICAL ASSISTANT

The demand for medical assistants is high and continues to grow. This 690-hour program is both clerically and medically oriented and prepares individuals to assist in physicians’ office, hospitals, clinics, veterinarian offices, schools and other health related facilities. Medical Secretary skills, such as typing, filing, office procedures, word processing, use of automated office equipment and bookkeeping are taught along with Medical Assistant skills such as electrocardiograms, vital signs, and assisting the physician in medical examinations. Clinical internships are scheduled throughout the program.

Coming in Spring 09 students will be able to take the National Certification Test for MAs and Phlebotomists.

Daytime class hours are 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday-Friday. Program dates can be found on the main Health Occupations web page. Students who successfully complete the program will receive a BOCES Certificate of Completion.

There is a $35 non-refundable application fee required to process your application. NO PERSONAL CHECKS ACCEPTED.

Prerequisites include a WorkKeys entrance exam,, high school diploma or GED, a physical examination, required immunizations, two references and an admissions interview.

After the student successfully completes the program and externship, they can sit for the certification test. They may take separate  tests for both Certified Medical Assistant and Certified Phlebotomy Technician.

The test will be given here at BOCES, about one to two months after completion of each class. The fee for each test ranges from $65.00 to 75.00.

Should a student not pass their certification test, they can re-test for a fee of $ 10.00.

Once a student has passed their certification test, they will be certified through the National Association of Health Professionals.  In order to keep their certifications current they must get 40 CEU's ( continuing education credits) through the NAHP, in 5 years.
