Services Provided By Teen Health Issues Educators

Provide one-to-one educational sessions to students requesting information relating to human sexuality, relationships, birth control, sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy.  Sessions will promote abstinence as the only 100% effective form of pregnancy and disease prevention.  The focus for sexually active students will be risk reduction.

Provide short-term decision making counseling with regards to relationships, birth control and pregnancy.  Communication and decision making skills will be reinforced.

Provide classroom presentations on issues related to teenage pregnancy prevention/sexuality education.

Provide technical assistance in the development of peer support groups.

Facilitate peer leader training on issues related to relationships, responsibility and decision making.

Confidential pregnancy testing can be provided for students requesting the service by the Oswego County Health Department.  Students may opt to have their urine specimens transported to the Health Department by the Teen Health Issues Educator.

Transportation to agencies and/or health clinics can be provided with parental permission.

Referrals will be made to appropriate school personnel - principal, guidance counselors and school psychologist - by the Teen Health Issues Educator when concerns other than those previously stated arise (family problems, drug, alcohol, suicide, abuse, etc.).

Information and referrals to appropriate county agencies will be given to students and school personnel.

The Teen Health Issues Educator is a mandated reporter and as such is required to report or cause a report to be made when there is reasonable cause to suspect that a youth coming before her is an abused or maltreated child.  Upon disclosure by a youth, a report will be made within 24 hours of the disclosure.  Within 48 hours of filing an oral report, a written report will be completed and sent to local Child Protective Services - DSS.  School administration will be informed of the report.  During a one-to-one session, students will be advised before initiating a discussion that disclosures of physical and sexual abuse and suicide ideations would have to be reported by the Teen Health Issues Educator.
