An alternative high school experience for students wanting a high school diploma, but at risk of dropping out. The students attending the Alternative High School have, invariably, a history of non-achievement in their home school setting. The primary consideration for acceptance into the program is a student’s potential for achieving success.  The vast majority of the students currently enrolled can be identified as students not working to their potential and/or at risk of leaving school prior to completing graduation requirements.  Most of these students demonstrate learning styles that are best accommodated by active participation, cooperative learning, and a “hands on” methodology.  The Alternative High School is strictly a “by choice” program.  Students may not be “sent” to the Alternative High School, and are free to transfer out by simple request.  Entry into the program is competitive, with a waiting list generated annually.  The Alternative High School typically does not accept students that are on long-term suspension or out of school as a result of a disciplinary hearing.

The Alternative High School offers a comprehensive secondary program that meets NYS requirements for graduation.  All core areas are offered as well as Art, Technology and Physical Education. Graduates of the program are prepared to and have entered four-year colleges, two-year colleges, the military and the work force.
