Summer Success is a BOCES program for students who have completed grade 3, 4, 5, or 6. It is Reading, Language Arts and Math based and directed towards students who are in need of continued learning during the summer. Elementary students face a 10 to 11 week break from instruction due to summer vacation. This disruption in the continuity of the educational process is cause for concern because it allows for memory loss of both learning and routine. For some students, this void can have great effect upon the September start of a new school year.
Summer Success combines various teaching methods that promote self and group work, library research, oral presentations, silent and teacher led reading sessions and other activities that maintain and/or increase achievement and self esteem. Learning disabled students will benefit from interaction with a Resource Teacher who does both push in and pull out instruction. A school counselor, librarian and tutor are also on staff and assist elementary students as necessary.
Summer Success will run 8:30-11:30, Monday through Thursday, with the exception of July 11 and 18 (two Fridays) on which it will also be held. In addition to the academics, students will participate in a Character Education program that includes a BOCES partnership with the Onondaga County SPCA and the Make a Wish Foundation of Central New York. Guest speakers and research projects are combined with daily academic requirements and highlight this aspect of the summer program. Summer Success administrators regularly visit classrooms to recognize students for perfect weekly attendance or other accomplishments. An end of the summer assembly is also held for the presentation of individual awards for overall achievement, most improved and other such designations.
Home schools will receive an end of the session progress report on each student as well as a portfolio of completed work by each student.
