Facility Review

One of the “perks” of the Arts-in-Education co-ser is a yearly facility review of your school theater facility.  A technical theater professional will visit your facility and examine all the technical aspects, as well as safety issues.

One, half-day long facility review (followed with a half day of reporting) is offered as part of your base subscription fee.  If additional days are needed, you may purchase them through the co-ser for a fee of approximately $150.00/day for member districts.  Inspections (audits) typically last ½ day per building and include observations on general condition of theater space including shops, storage areas, catwalks and seating.  An additional ½ day is spent writing a narrative report on the facility with recommendations for improvement.

Where possible, all counter weight systems are operated.  Lighting systems are checked for proper usage and practices.  Observations are made of stage area, catwalks and seating for safety issues.  This type of audit does not include checking of overhead rigging hardware.  This can be done in a second ½ day, but the facility must provide access to the hardware.  (Renting a boom or scissors lift of adequate capacity can sometimes only do this.)

First time reports are lists of observations and recommendations.

Typically photographs are included to help illustrate the observations.  Future audit reports are more narrative in nature, and typically include operational recommendations.

A technical theater professional is hired to do this facility review.  Robert Dwyer, currently Technical Operations Manager of the Syracuse Civic Center theatre complex. Robert has over 30 years experience in the technical theater area, and has been a member of IATSE for over 20 years.

To schedule a facility review, simply contact Regional Arts-In-Education Service at Oswego BOCES. Arrangements will be made for the review to be done at your convenience.
