Offered as a regional BOCES service, the Regional Arts-In-Education Service is available to all component school districts in the following Central New York BOCES (through a cross-contract with the Oswego County BOCES):

* Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES

* Jefferson-Lewis BOCES

* Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES

* Oswego BOCES

This service is intended to encourage a school district to allocate those resources it now expends locally through a comprehensive and coordinated BOCES program administered as per State Education Department guidelines for aidable programs. To that end, this service works through an advisory council of school district representatives (BAAC). The council also includes representatives from public and private agencies and institutions of higher education involved in arts programs. Also in place since 1992-93, is a Steering Committee comprised of Superintendents and BOCES representatives. This committee, known as the Superintendents’ Advisory Council or SAC, oversees the financial needs of the service and recommends adjustments in fees when appropriate.

The Base Fee provides districts with membership on the BOCES Arts Advisory Council, publications, on-site consultation, staff development programs, grants services, showcases, and access to a full range of K-12 programs and of arts providers.

Program components available include eight areas:

Touring Artist/Residency Program

  go

“In School” performances, in a wide variety of art genres. All programs of this type are aidable expenditures.

Artist in Residency Program

The Oswego County BOCES Arts-In-Education Service has information on a wide variety of artists who ar experienced in conducting residencies in all artistic disciplines - dance, music, drama, and visual arts. Residencies last from three to five days, or more. These experiences give students unique insights into the creative process and we can provide models for curriculum integration.

Admission Tickets for Performance/Exhibition Attendance

  go

Tickets for students to attend performances/exhibitions (Youth Theater, Syracuse Stage, Cortland Repertory, Erie Canal Museum, Everson Museum, Tyler Art Gallery, etc.) can be purchased through the arts service. This also includes tickets to performances in major cities (New York, Toronto, etc. ) (aidable) This component is intended for off-site experiences in the arts areas only, not programs more suited to health, science, technology, etc.

Arts-In-Education Showcase

  go

An annual spring event, the showcase features “preview performances” from top artists.  Exhibitors are also present.  Plan on attending the annual showcases to find the best artists for your school.

Art$TART Mini-Grants

  go

Through a collaboration with Partners for Arts Education in Syracuse, NYS Council on the Arts mini-grants are available to fund long-term and curriculum-infused arts programming in the schools. We provide consultation in the preparation of these grants.

Author Visits

  go

This component will help districts bring authors and illustrators into schools. We maintain a complete list of available authors, fees, and availability. Workshops to help teachers and librarians facilitate author visits will be available throughout the school year.

Writer in Residence Program

This program gives students in grades 2-12 the opportunity to work with professional writers and learn the basic tools and strategies of poetry and prose. The basic residency consists of five days, but can be expanded.

Facilities Review

  go

A consultant in technical theater design and theater health, safety and insurance issues will review school district performance rooms and spaces. Each member district receives one day of technical consultation per year as part of the Base Subscription Fee.

C.N.Y. Institute for Aesthetic Education

Based on the “Lincoln Center Model,” this Institute has the following purposes:

a.) to provide summer in-service training for classroom teachers from all subject areas

b.) to make available professional performers and arts for in-classroom programming

c.) to support the Institute as a classroom curriculum-integrated program, using teaching artists
