Holly's Harps is a hands-on music program which brings 30 harps into schools and other sites. Holly's Harps encourages students to view music and other arts as integral parts of their lives. Children learn about music, explore scientific principles, link music to math, consider other cultures in history, use new vocabulary in multiple languages, and enjoy hands-on music-making. Children from your community can perform in concert on harps.
How to schedule the day:
An assembly is required for all students who will participate in a workshop, so we begin with one or more assemblies and spend the remainder of the day in workshops.
Activity length:
Primary assembly: 30 minutes
Intermediate assembly: up to 40 minutes (30 is ok but 40 is better)
Middle School assembly: same as intermediate
Hands-on workshop: If we are following your normal specials schedule, the harp workshop will be the length of your normal class period. If you are making a special schedule for the harp program, then schedule as follows: For pre-K, K, 1 and 2, a workshop can be anywhere from 15-30 minutes. For 3rd grade, 30 minutes. For 4th grade and up, anything from 30-45 minutes.
Number of participants:
Each assembly can serve up to 250 kids, in one age group. For example, schedule separate assemblies to serve primary, intermediate and middle school. (Do not mix primary and intermediate or intermediate and middle at one assembly please.) For workshops, the maximum is 60 students if they are in pre-K, K, 1, or 2. The maximum is 30 students if the kids are in grades 3 or higher. Normally there is one grade level per workshop. If you wish to combine kids from two grades in one workshop please check with the artist.
No exceptions can be made on workshop size because there are exactly 30 student harps available; primary kids through second grade can do a cooperative activity in pairs but kids in 3rd grade and up do an activity where each child has her or his "own" harp for the workshop.

Eth-Noh-Tec is interdisciplinary theater that is at once precision choreography, lyrical word-weaving, graceful, playful and poetic. By layering ancient Asian mythologies, folktales and Asian urban legends with Asian American sensibilities, Eth-Noh-Tec has created an exciting new blend of storytelling and kinetic theater.
Prior to each story, we introduce an idea, a thought, a theme and then invite the audience to explore this as they journey through the portal of the story. Sometimes following a tale, we invoke further discussion, encourage questions, or offer cultural information as a way to connect the ancient tale to their everyday "here and now" life.

Brien Engel is one of very few people reviving and promoting the enchanting art of glass music. His instrument is a glass harp, consisting of 50 goblets of various sizes, which he plays by rubbing their rims with moistened fingers. Brien has made notable strides in bringing unusual and challenging styles of playing to glass music, and in school environments has been hailed by teachers and administrators for his rapport with students and singular ability to weave his art into curriculum, leaving students inspired! Connections abound between this unusual art form and understanding the physics of sound, the inventive process, and the history of glassmaking and American History (Brien's program also features a small glass armonica, the first American musical instrument, invented by Benjamin Franklin). In addition to his glass instruments, Brien also employs bird calls, musical saw, and Tibetan Singing Bowls in his performance. To see a teacher's study guide, and to hear some of Brien's music please visit his web site: www.glassharp.org, email: glassharp@mindspring.com
