INCLUSION STRATEGIES

Inclusion means that all students regardless of their disability become a part of the school community.

Nine types of adaptations for successful inclusive settings:

size-number of students

time- amount of time with students

bullet

level of support- amount of assistance to student

bullet

input- adapt way instruction delivered to student

bullet

difficulty- adapt skill level, problem type, or rules

bullet

output-adapt how student can respond to instruction

bullet

participation- adapt extent to which learner is actively involved in the task

bullet

alternative-adapt goals or outcome expectations while using the same materials

bullet

substitute curriculum-different instruction and materials to meet individual student needs


COMPONENTS OF SUCCESSFUL INCLUSIVE SETTINGS

There are six components noted within all schools that have successful inclusive settings for students with disabilities.  The elements are:

A mission statement is developed

High expectations are set for all students

bullet

A positive school climate is promoted

bullet

Parents are involved in a meaningful way

bullet

Strong education leadership is promoted

bullet

High collaboration between and among teachers is evident


ADAPT THE CONTENT FORMAT

Give clear and concise directions

Organize content

Teach students how to use notes for study and review

bullet

Assign peer tutors/buddies

bullet

Review test content and format

bullet

Adapt presentation to students needs

bullet

Motivate students

bullet

Modify assignments

Task analysis


ADAPT THE ASSESSMENT

Teachers should:

Provide clear, concise directions

bullet

Keep directions simple

bullet

Be sure directions are readable, clearly presented

bullet

Provide test modifications as indicated on IEP

bullet

Teach students skills needed to study

bullet

Teach students the content and skills reflected in the tests

bullet

Have involvement from all teachers

Students should know:

What is expected, required on the test

bullet

What the test format will be

bullet

The time that is allotted for the test

bullet

If they should be guessing at questions or not

bullet

How to mark their responses (e.g. bubble sheet, written)

bullet

Is erasing is okay

bullet

How they should place their booklet on the desk

bullet

How to organize information so that they can use to study for tests
