Professional Development Workshops

The Pre Multi-Occ Program is designed for students ages 13.7 to 14.6 who want to participate in a general shop exploratory experience. The program is currently housed on the campus of the State University College at Oswego. Students attend the program five half-days each week.

The Pre Multi-Occ students participate in 8-10 project-oriented modules. Students receive hands-on experience, along with classroom instruction, to reinforce related vocabulary and measurement skills. The ability to follow directions, safety rules, and appropriate social skills are stressed.

Each ten weeks the students will receive a progress report assessing their hands-on skills, work habits, and social skills. In addition, each student exits Pre Multi-Occ with a portfolio.

The staff recommends programming for the following school year. Current program options include Multi-Occ I or full-day placement in the home school. Recommendations are forwarded to the Committee on Special Education and/or appropriate home school district personnel.

The Pre Multi-Occ modules include:

  • Plastics: Students complete basic projects using acrylic bending, vacuum forming and encapsulation.
  • Wood: Students complete basic wood projects after being instructed in the proper use of basic hand and power tools.
  • Ceramics: Students complete ceramic projects using slip casting and a kiln.
  • Metals: Students complete a project after receiving instruction in the proper use of a hacksaw and nippers.
  • Photography: Students are instructed in the basics of picture taking, developing, and enlarging.
  • Printing: Students complete basic projects utilizing proper placement and binding.
  • Electricity: Students are instructed in the basic use of soldering and electrical processes.
  • Race Cars and Rocketry: Students design and make basic model race cars and rockets, and relate these projects to current events.
